Is Your Company Sanctioning Weight Discrimination? Don’t Cite Hooters in Your Defense
In their latest Employment Law in Focus column in Today’s General Counsel, Woods Rogers principals and management-side employment attorneys Leah Stiegler and Anne Bibeau advise legal departments on the complicated and wide-ranging impact of weight discrimination in the workplace.
“Whether well-intentioned for health reasons or not, weight discrimination and weight-based requirements in the workplace may be unlawful,” the authors explain. “While there is no federal law in the United States that prohibits weight discrimination in the workplace, some states and cities do have weight discrimination protections.”
Leah and Anne explain why this is an essential issue for employers to watch and suggest how companies can prevent bias and promote body inclusivity.
