Virginia AI Bills Could Serve as Nationwide Model
Woods Rogers’ Beth Waller and Patrick Austin authored an article for Law360 that highlights Virginia’s leadership in technology and privacy laws and how the Commonwealth is once again blazing a trail with proposed legislation governing the use of artificial intelligence. Building on a balanced and pro-business approach to privacy law, two AI bills are currently in committee before the state’s General Assembly Joint Commission on Technology and Science, which is thoughtfully considering testimony about the pros and cons of AI legislation.
Beth and Patrick outline the Virginia model and compare it to other recently enacted legislation in Colorado, Utah, California, and the European Union.
“The regulatory requirements contained in Virginia’s draft AI legislation would primarily affect developers, integrators, and deployers of high-risk AI systems,” the authors wrote in Law360. With a shorter legislative session in 2025, we should know soon whether AI legislation is on a path toward passage.
