Beth Waller and Patrick Austin Provide An Overview of AI Legal Framework

2024 General Assembly Session

In the 2024 General Assembly Session, Senator Aird (D, Senate District 13) introduced SB 487, which directs the Joint Commission on Technology and Science (JCOTS), in consultation with relevant stakeholders, to analyze the use of artificial intelligence by public bodies in the Commonwealth and the creation of a Commission on Artificial Intelligence.

Woods Rogers Cybersecurity & Data Privacy attorneys Beth Burgin Waller and Patrick Austin were invited to present as experts on current AI legal frameworks before Virginia's Joint Commission on Technology and Science (JCOTS) in Richmond. JCOTS heard presentations on various aspects of AI (including different types of AI, engendering and promoting trust in AI, how AI works, etc.) and on blockchain technology. The information presented by Beth and Patrick on AI legal frameworks is intended to help serve JCOTS in its analysis of the use of AI by public bodies and in various sectors of the economy in the Commonwealth.
