Al spent many years in the active practice of business law, focusing on tax-exempt bonds, taxable financings, employee benefits and nonprofit organizations.
Among other activities, he represented Carilion Clinic and affiliated hospitals in more than $1.5 billion of tax-exempt financings and served as bond counsel, borrower’s counsel, lender’s counsel or trustee’s counsel on other bond issues totaling more than $3.5 billion.
Al uses his newfound leisure time to play with his three grandsons, walk, read and follow UVA sports.
He also volunteers for a number of charities and has served as a director and/or officer of numerous charitable organizations, including Planned Parenthood Health Systems, Inc., Planned Parenthood of the Blue Ridge, Inc., Roanoke Area Ministries, Lewis-Gale Foundation, Mental Health America of Roanoke Valley, Inc., Greater Southwest Athletic Association and Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund.
Al misses the days when he coached youth basketball, baseball and soccer.
