Get To Know Kristin

Litigator Kristin Johnson has more than 17 years of federal court experience. She focuses her practice on white collar defense, government investigations, and crisis management. Kristin represents corporate and individual clients in federal and state investigations involving criminal, civil, and regulatory matters in the areas of health care, finance, pharmaceuticals, consumer protection, education, and labor and employment. She also guides clients through internal investigations in the wake of misconduct allegations.

Kristin previously served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia, where she investigated and prosecuted a variety of white collar crimes including health care, tax, bank, wire, bankruptcy and mail frauds; money laundering; as well as violations of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), the Gun Control Act (GCA), the National Firearms Act (NFA), the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations; interstate threats; possession, distribution and production of child pornography; and other criminal activity. She served as lead counsel in federal jury and bench trials and has extensive experience with federal grand jury proceedings.

Kristin served the Western District of Virginia as a designated opioid coordinator, intern coordinator, discovery coordinator, and assistant Professional Responsibility Officer and Ethics Advisor for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

She was awarded the U.S. Attorney’s Award in 2024 and was recognized by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Department of Homeland Security Federal Protective Service (FPS), and Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Criminal Investigations (FDA) for her efforts and contributions over the course of her more than six years with the Department of Justice. She is also a prior recipient of the Roanoke Bar Association’s Young Lawyer of the Year Award.

Before becoming a federal prosecutor, Kristin served over ten years as the career law clerk to the Honorable Michael F. Urbanski, the former-Chief, now-Senior United States District Judge for the Western District of Virginia. A firm believer in alternatives to prosecution, Kristin assisted Judge Urbanski with the formation of the Veteran’s Treatment Court and federal Drug Treatment Court during her tenure with the court.

Kristin began her legal career at Woods Rogers, where she worked as an associate in the firm’s commercial litigation section before embarking on nearly two decades of public service.

In addition to leaning heavily on her extensive criminal and investigative experience, Kristin draws on her background in finance, having earned a degree in Commerce from the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce before attending law school.

Originally from Tampa, Florida, Kristin has traded the gulf for the pool, where she spends an inordinate amount of time shuttling her three active boys to and from swim practice. Otherwise, you might find her running the Kentucky bourbon trails with her Ragnar relay team and stopping for a pour (always neat) along the way, or planning a meal for her family’s weekly Sunday Supper.
